Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga is the relaxed practice of floor postures. Using slow, deep stretches, Yin Yoga opens and stimulates core connective tissue, increasing fluidity, calming the mind and encouraging a sense of joy and well being. It is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize the lengthening and contracting of our muscles.
Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. In this way, it prepares the body and the mind for longer meditation practices. By drawing the awareness away from the muscles and deeper into the bones, a deep level of relaxed focus is achieved and the often over stimulated nervous system is soothed. On an energetic level, Yin enhances the flow of prana (life force) in the tissues around the joints, where energy often stagnates.
Yin Yoga sequences often focus on strengthening certain energy channels which are called nadis in yoga or meridians in Chinese medicine. These vital channels support the organs, immune system, and emotional well-being. A Taoist interpretation of yoga styles emphasizes the critical difference between the Yin and Yang tissues of the body. Muscles and blood are Yang; connective tissues and joints are Yin. Yin and Yang tissues do not respond to training in the same way and a student’s practice becomes more effective when the difference is understood and both types of yoga are practiced.
